Fabrics for Baby Quilt

All the pieces for the baby quilt are printed.  About a third are cut out and ready to stitch.  While I’m making this scrappy, it’s going to be controlled scrappy with shades of 7 colours — red, blue, pink, green, yellow, purple and peach with a white as the background fabric.  Printing all the shapes needed for the quilt took less than an hour.  What took time this weekend was planning it.  I spent hours on Saturday with coloured markers and a printed-out layout, colouring in where each piece will go to meet my goal of ensuring no two pieces of the same colour are beside each other.

That convinced me — I have to make the effort to learn EQ.  I’ve tried before with limited success mostly because sitting in front of the computer trying to learn it feels like work.  But after spending hours and hours on Saturday and countless printed-out layouts later, I realize how much quicker and easier it would have been had I been able to do that part of the planning in EQ.

So my goal for this week?  As it looks like work has hit the August slow-down, I’m going to spend at least an hour or two each day learning EQ.  Between Inklingo and EQ, I would have the best possible combination for planning quilts.  Along with that, I’m going to try to work solely on the baby quilt for the next week or so and see if I can get the top put together quickly.

It was a rather overcast weekend with light rain on and off so it worked out perfectly for planning the quilt and getting the shapes printed.

Sunday afternoon the cats were curled up.  Smudge with a teddy bear.

  1. Yummy fabrics Cathi, infact a few look very familiar ;)) I think they are in my 30s stash.
I’m right there with you regarding EQ. I got 5 and then got 6. I’ve barely learned either so am not getting 7. I always start off with good intentions to sit for half an hour… but it seems even half an hour isn’t done. Each time I get the urge to study I have to start at the begining again as I’ve forgotten what I learned the first session. LOL… Oh well I am not alone.. I do use it but it’s usually trial and error with loads of error parts..
Looking forward to see what you do for this baby quilt. hugs Ellyx

  2. The fabrics you chose are my favorites! 30s are wonderful and will make a beautiful quilt. Good for you, learning EQ! But remember no matter how you design your quilts, they are sure to turn out just beautifully!

  3. Hooray for you to learn EQ. It’s such a great tool. You could figure out the layout of the quilt, put the block into each square then color each area with the paint tool. That way you would be sure to keep the colors separated :0)

  6. I am working on learning EQ as well. I have to buy a pc though as I work on a Mac and EQ isn’t supported on a Mac which I think is a crying shame. I really didn’t like my pc.

Working out the fabrics takes me the longest when I start a new quilt. Some times days….

  7. I can’t wait to see what pattern you are using Cathi. I have a pile of fabrics very similiar in colors, mostly 30’s/children’s novelty, so I can’t wait to be inspired by your work.
Good for you for learning the EQ~~~
I have not, and not sure if I will. So far,I’m a scrappy/nonplanner/just do it kinda quilter. However, I’m sure the day will come where I’ll want to make more planned, organized, special types of quilts.
    Love your cats!

  8. I’m another one who has EQ6 but doesn’t use it much….but it’s been very useful when I have used it, and I am pondering deeply on whether I really truly need EQ7, and so far the answer is no. But I’m still thinking…..

  9. I enjoyed taking online Quilt University classes on EQ. Made me learn it a lot faster than doing it myself…
I gave up on EQ when I lost access to a PC- it’s not worth installing windows software on my Mac.
