One Flower Wednesday … Again

One tiny flower got done on Wednesday for the border of the small quilt, made with .50″ hexagons. But only one. Hopefully next week I can actually make more than 1 or 2 of these little flowers. The list of gardeners making flowers on Wednesdays is growing. Karen’s post here has a list with links to all the gardeners.

On Wednesday, Mr. Q.O. went to a documentary film festival. The screening to which he went was at a theatre that is part of the University of Toronto, which is within walking distance. On his walk, he saw these little flowers.

Along with doing the one small hexagon flower, I finished the second Summer Picnic Dish. As I have learned from doing Spring Circles that joining the blocks as I go makes a big difference for me, I added the half centre edge piece to join the two blocks on point. My plan is to use the green fabric that’s in the blocks for the binding.

I finally got caught up on replying to comments and hope to start reading and commenting on blogs over the next couple of days. I should have been working on Wednesday, but I think the tension of the past few days really caught up with me as I just could not concentrate! I finally gave up on working for the day and played with fabric, patted Smudge a lot and tried to relax. Thank you to all who commented on yesterday’s post — it helped rather a lot!

It was a sunny, windy day at first on Wednesday and then it clouded over and we had our first thunderstorm of the season. Not much of a thunderstorm, but a thunderstorm. Earlier in the day, while it was still sunny, we got this shot of Lester. It really shows his whiskers.

Smudge was relaxing on the chair.

One Flower Wednesday … on Thursday

These little flowers are so fast to put together that I couldn’t resist making 4 of them. My idea for a quilt using these is changing quite a bit though. I may be putting these in a quilt of their own rather than with the blossoms seen here.

Tuesday night I spent some time looking through this book before I fell asleep and, of course, woke up Wednesday morning with all sorts of ideas. Although the instructions are written in Japanese, it really doesn’t matter as there are tons of illustrations.

There are a number of super hexagon quilts in the book. This is one of my favourites:

Although this picture doesn’t quite show it, at one point Wednesday afternoon the sky got quite stormy looking. I thought we might have had our first thunderstorm of the season, but we had only a brief downpour of rain. I just realized we didn’t even have thunder snow last winter so it has been ages since we’ve had a storm. As evident from the picture, the leaves on the tree are just starting to open.

Lester was at his normal post for this time of year — on the windowsill.

While Smudge seemingly decided it was a great day to laze about. He always makes me laugh when he stretches out like this.

Hexagon Blossoms

I haven’t worked on this little top for ages so decided to add another blossom to it with the surrounding green path last night. That’s a dime on top of one of the little hexagons to give an idea of size. Each side of the hexagons finishes at half an inch.

I initially printed a few thousand of these small hexagons, almost all on 5″ charms, thinking I’d make the Insanity quilt seen here. I quickly decided I didn’t want to make that quilt and now have all these tiny hexagons. While I’ve started the little top shown above, I know that is going to end up as a small doll’s quilt. I’ll use half and quarter hexagons around the outer edges so that I have straight outer edges to the little quilt.

As long as I finger press these as I go, it’s very simple to press the top. I do press after I add each blossom.

More of the blossoms are ready and I have enough of the green surrounding hexagons printed to surround these plus a few more. Once that’s done I’ll assess if I want to make the little top any larger.

Our forecast for the weekend is fabulous — sunny and highs of 7 Celsius both days. The whole week has been wonderful with sunny days that have been relatively mild, considering it’s early March.

Lester looks like he’s thinking about spring and watching the birds and squirrels from the window.
