Clamshell Club

When I first read about the Clamshell Club on Cybele’s Patch, I was immediately captivated and now somehow I seem to have three clamshell projects on the go at once!  It’s worth it to go over to Cybele’s Patch blog and visit the other clamshell makers listed there.

My first project is being made with the Inklingo 3″ clamshell collection and will be at least a lap-sized quilt.  I fell in love with the quilt in Kaffe Fassett’s Museum Quilts and am using Kaffe fabrics for my diamonds of clamshells.  I’m hand piecing all of the projects and have found that even pressing them is simpler than I expected.  This is the back of my first of the Museum Quilts quilt block.

The second project is also being made with the 3″ clamshells and will turn into a teddy bear or doll’s quit.

The third project is going to be another small quilt telling the story of some pink clams making their way out of the water on to a beach.  I’ve just got started on it and for this one I’m using the Inklingo 3.5″ clamshell collection.

By this time next month when it’s time to report on clamshells again,  I think the two small quilts will be finished and hopefully at least 1 or 2 more clamshell diamonds for the large quilt will be done.

This is the second week in a row I have no flowers to add to my garden.  I’m hoping to have at least 3 or 4 to show next week.

Tuesday I got this shot of Lester and, although it’s a bit fuzzy, couldn’t resist posting it.  It makes me laugh just to look at it.  If you click on the photo to enlarge it, you’ll see his tongue is out.

Smudge was quite intently looking at something I was holding just above the camera when I took this shot.

  1. You are really going to town with your clamshells. They look gorgeous!! It looks as if perhaps, Lester is looking at a recipe book and just can’t wait to eat!

  3. I’ve used the clamshell pattern for hand quilting but have never thought about piecing them. After seeing yours, Cathi, I might have to rethink this. I just love how yours are turning out!

  4. These are just so beautiful – are you going to sew some pearl buttons on at certain places? Looking for the hidden pearl among the clams shells is what I want to do looking at your pictures.

  5. Oh Cathi you are doing so well. The clamshells are so pretty. I love the story about the little clams making their way to the beach. And I am sure the KF quilt will be great. I am looking forward to the next update.

  6. Your clamshells look fantastic Cathi! I never thought you could handpiece them like that. The Inklingo is a great concept, I have seen some wonderful blocks made from this.

  9. My apologies, Cathi. I was impressed with TWO clamshell quilts, but it is actually THREE! Oh, my! Monkey is impressed too.

<!I wasn’t planning on making three, but somehow the fabric just got itself ironed to some freezer paper and fed through the printer and … well, you know how that story ends. 🙂

  10. These are so beautiful. I’ve seen some crappy clamshell quilts and know they aren’t easy to make. Your work is always superior. And this is no less than that.

  11. I somehow missed commenting on this post, even though I did look at it.
I’m going to have to start closing my eyes on the clamshell parts, you are making me want to do them! I have to finish Ethan’s I SPy first… then, I’m toast!

  12. All I can say is wow! There’s no stopping you now! They all look lovely Cathi, I particularly like the Kaffe diamonds. I very nearly went down this line with mine, then changed my mind…as you do.
I’m very, very tempted to start another clamshell top in rows too, using Kaffe tans, browns & ochres…..I definately need more time!

  13. The colours in that clamshell block are so pretty, I love the Kaffe fabrics. The pink clams look fabulous rising up to the top of the see – all 3 projects are super in fact.
