Alabama Beauty & the Clamshells

This is the block I mentioned earlier this week — the first of the blocks for the Spring Circles quilt I’ll be making for us when my aunt’s quilt is finished.  For now, though, it will be tucked away to come back out when I get started in earnest on the quilt for us.

The layout of the clamshells quilt in Kaffe Fassett’s Museum Quilts book has had me fascinated since the day I first saw it.  I don’t intend to make a large quilt using these fabrics, but think I may make one with 5 of the diamonds.  They are so much fun to stitch that I couldn’t resist and so now have the first diamond past the point of its middle row.  This isn’t pressed yet as I’m avoiding the pressing until the diamond is finished.

Rain poured down starting Wednesday afternoon.  The cats were quite content to have a nice rainy day snooze.  Smudge in one of his stretched out poses on the couch.

And Lester on the pink chair.

  1. And Clamshells!!! no wonder you are hunkering for 48 hour days!
I cannot get over how beautiful they are… Well done my friend!
I am not surprised that I too have been prepping clamshells (mine are the boring cousins of yours…),
    How fun!

  2. I will have to go back and take a closer look at the clamshell quilt in his book. I must have skimmed over that one, knowing that I will probably never make one. Yours is coming along beautiful! Nothing like a rainy day to sit and sew or just lounge like the cats.

  3. Cathi, you are so amazing! I don’t know how you do it!~always keeping us inspired and motivated to follow your lead. I wanted to ask, how many years have you been handpiecing? Your skill is top notch.
I got out Kaffe’s book again. (I was lucky enough to obtain a signed copy!~he was at some iddy biddy quilt shop in S.GA and they had extras of several. I think I purchased 6 different ones! The ladies said he was so down to earth…) I like the way these are done in triangles/block type. I won’t be tackling them for a while (I think~!), but so look forward to waching and learning from you. XO

  4. Very pretty clamshells, and I love that picture of Smudge! Although, I must admit, the title of your post sounded a bit to me like the name of a folk-rock group. 🙂

  5. I have always admired the clamshell quilts but never even though about making one. I think I will have to add this to my “bucket list” too. I also like the idea of a bucket list. I sorta have a mental image of quilts I want to make, but it might be fun to make a list and then check them off. Lets see…there is the Dresden Plate, Baltimore Album, Hexagon quilt of some kind, Dahlia, Spools (in process), Apple core and now Clam shell I can add to the list. Thanks for the idea (I think).

  6. Love the clamshells. I also enjoy hand piecing a lot – with patterns like this one it even seems to go faster than with machine piecing. Love your fabrics… am going to follow your progress! (-:

  7. Gorgeous clamshells Cathi & they look so easy with Inklingo! Wish I hadn’t started mine already as I would have given this version a try! Is there a 3.5″ size available?
