Close to Finished

Two more melon/arc units and the little runner will be finished. This has been a great experience and gives me total confidence that making a larger Double Wedding Ring quilt is something I’ll really enjoy. I’ll finish this during the weekend and then start planning a big one. I’m also thinking of a crib quilt one. For a baby quilt, I think I’d like to use some brights. Perhaps the Kaffe Fassett prints.

There’s a list of quilt-related things I want to accomplish over the weekend. First, finish piecing the DWR runner and possibly even get it basted. I found the perfect quilting thread for it last weekend at Sew Sisters. Second, get the Tropical Punch blocks stitched together with that glorious lime green batik. Third, print and cut the pieces for the rainbow of the Sky Quilt. Finally, print the pieces for the drunkard’s path basket quilt.

The weather today is supposed to be glorious with temperatures close to 19C and sun. Lots and lots of wonderful sun and warmth.

Lester still waiting for the kitty entertainment to show up. Still no squirrels and not too many birds.

Smudge posing for the camera. He literally holds the pose when he hears the camera being turned on. And then, when we start to walk away, he’ll strike another pose and look at us as if to say, “Well, aren’t you photographing this??”

Tuesday Tidbits

This is the beginning of the centre of the quilt I’m going to make using some of the .50″ hexagons I have printed. I’m purposely not setting the 4-hexagon units in line or in specific spots. There may be areas where there will be a 3 or 4 green hexagons between the little florets. I know this project will get put away and taken out again over and over, but it will be my main hexagon project for the next while. It seems I always have to have a hexagon project of some sort or another on the go.

This is half of a melon/arc unit done for the DWR quilt. The hand dyes I’m using in the arcs are rather like a batik and, as my hands are still quite painful, I’m going to forego stitching these by hand this time. I’ll turn this into a hybrid project and will do the arc piecing by machine and then I can have the fun of stitching the arcs to the melons and centres by hand, thus enjoying all that wonderful curved piecing.

This is one of the reasons I love this new Inklingo DWR collection, although there are a whole host of reasons to be thrilled with it. This worksheet, along with others that come as part of the collection, are absolutely fantastic tools and make planning a DWR a breeze!

The weather on Monday was dreadful. Windy, cold, raining, snowing, you name it! We had less than a centimetre of snow all of March, so seeing snow falling on the 6th of April seemed rather cruel! I know it won’t last but still — snow?? This was the roof garden Monday evening. The snow wasn’t melting as soon as it hit.

Although the snow was falling outside, thankfully we have the dome and the roof was closed Monday night for the opening game of the baseball season, which was fabulous and our Jays won! Although, if some of the fans had continued on with their silly antics, the game could have been forfeited. It was really a shame to see fans throwing paper airplanes and baseballs and who knows what else out on to the field. Aside from being silly and childish and distracting from what was an absolutely fabulous inning for the Jays, they could have caused real harm to the players in the outfield. I can’t believe they would do that and put their home team in peril of forfeiting a game that they were winning. The looks on the faces of the umpires and managers told the whole story — I think they were utterly appalled. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The game was delayed for approximately 10 minutes while the groundskeepers removed the debris from the field and the crowd settled down after being told by the announcer that anyone caught doing that would be required to leave the dome and could face criminal charges. Why does the opening game of the season bring out the worst in fans?

The wind was quite fierce Monday night and Smudge seemed a bit unsettled by it. However, that didn’t stop him from posing for pictures. Nothing stops him from posing for pictures!

Lester wasn’t going to hang out on the windowsill Monday. It was much too cold. He found a nice spot to curl up and have a nap.

Sunrise and Sunset

Being completely unable to resist working with these fabrics, the sunrise block was stitched together this weekend.

The sunrise and sunset blocks side by side. They will be in corners of the quilt when it’s done.

The sky quilt, as I’m now thinking of it, will have the rainbow in the centre, and then a different block in each of the 4 corners. Sunrise and sunset are done. I’m playing with ideas for the other 2 corners — maybe a moon done in a deep blue with a silvery white for one of them. And then maybe a silvery white star on a dark blue background for the other? I’m still very undecided, but it’s fun to think over while I’m doing other things.

The setting pieces for the baby quilt are all printed and the first side is now finished. This is just lots of continuous stitching, so it won’t take long. Well, it won’t take long if I stop playing with the sky quilt!

This week I will finish and mail off the Four Seasons quilt. I was somewhat confused about the mailing date but checked the Four Seasons blog and the date to mail is March 30. Mine will be mailed before then for sure.

We had a glorious weekend. Temperatures of almost 12C and sun. Lots and lots of glorious sun. We even saw some little green shoots in a garden when we were out for a walk. I think spring may finally be on the way.

Smudge is catching up on that lost hour of sleep.

Lester is hanging out with the teddy bear.

More Snowy Windows

I think this darker blue is the fabric I’ll use for the sashing. I believe it makes the very light blue look more like snow. A few small crystal beads here and there on the “snow” for sparkle should help accentuate that effect.

It snowed yesterday. Huge fluffy flakes of snow. If you click on this photo to enlarge it, you’ll see white blurs. Those are the huge flakes drifting by.

Then it began to rain. Again, if you enlarge this photo you can see all sorts of little drops clinging to the limbs of the tree — they were glittering almost like diamonds. I’m really stretching it here, trying to find something about this winter dragging on and on and on that I like.

DH was back at the eye doctor yesterday and is going back again this afternoon. His eye looks better and he says it feels better. The number of drops, however, is now up to 4 different drops every 4 hours.

This is, I think, one of my favourite shots of Lester. I love the look on his face in this.

Four Seasons Quilt Swap 5

This is the batik that I’m using as the dark for my Four Seasons Quilt Swap quilt. It’s actually a darker blue than it appears in this photo but the camera had trouble getting this colour, it seems. I’ve had the idea for the little quilt almost from the day I got my partner’s information, but finding just the right fabric has been more challenging than I would have anticipated. However, I’m really happy with this as the base and am ready to print and stitch.

Wednesday was not a great day around here. DH felt worse and his eye was unbelievably bloodshot as well as being very sore. Off he went to the eye doctor, who diagnosed him with iritis and sent him home with eye drops. Apparently iritis can be caused by an infection such as the one he’s been battling since that dental appointment. After 4 or 5 hours of the drops done hourly there was a huge improvement. The redness is almost all gone and his eye is nowhere near as tender. He’s back to the eye doctor on Friday. Hopefully this round of antibiotics knocks the infection out. If not, I’m wondering if it’s time to ask for a referral to an infection specialist — preferably through his cardiologist, I think.

It was wonderfully mild for mid-February on Wednesday. At 11:00 at night I still had windows open. We had a very foggy evening, as you can see from the picture below. I love foggy nights — as long as we have no reason to have to try to drive in it.

Foggy nights don’t worry the cats. Smudge in his kitty bed …

… and Lester on the chair.

I’ve put a link on my sidebar to the Australian Red Cross. If you click on it, you will be able to contribute to the relief efforts as they try to cope with the devastation caused by those terrible fires. Edited to add: The link has been fixed.

Butterfly Stars

Another full row of butterfly hexagons has been added and it’s slowly starting to grow. There won’t be much progress this week, however, as I need to spend some time getting the stars for the next row and another set of butterfly hexagons ready.

A change in the decision on my FSQS5 fabrics and pattern. Finally. I kept looking for the perfect shade of a colour, totalling ignoring the back of some fabric which was exactly what I was looking for. Now that the decision is made, it won’t take long to print my shapes and get the little quilt stitched. Friday I’m printing the shapes and hope to have half the quilt pieced by the end of the weekend.

DH thinks the antibiotics are starting to have an effect. Maybe the third time will be lucky and he’ll get this sorted and behind him.

Remember all that snow on the roof garden? This is about what’s left. Of course, we have snow coming next week, they say, but it’s nice to look out and see no snow! We even saw birds in the trees on Tuesday. Made me realize just how little wildlife we’ve seen over the past couple of months — no squirrels, no birds. I guess it has been too cold for them.

Smudge certainly knows how to relax.

Lots Started, Nothing Finished

The title of the post is the perfect way to describe my weekend. I started getting my apple core charms ready for the Inklingo apple core swap, got all the printing done and most of the cutting but am I finished? No. Got the little diamonds picked out to make more stars for Butterfly Stars but did I get any stitched? No. Did get more of the butterfly hexagons for it printed and ready to be stitched. Had about 5 different design ideas for the FSQS5 swap but did I settle on one? No. Have the fabrics for that all ready to cut but even that isn’t finalized. This one is challenging; having to be monochromatic makes one really look at value.

Sunday I received these glorious fabrics from Charlsey. I’ve seen pictures of these Chez Moi fabrics on blogs and online shops but hadn’t actually seen them in person. I love the feel of these! Gorgeous. I think I’ll be dreaming about what to do with them.

Among the many things I did this weekend that were fabric related was dig out these fabrics. I have had the print for ages and keep looking for the perfect pattern to show it off. I think, but am not sure, I want to make a quilt with just it and a neutral. The off-white stripe is one of those really silky Northcott fabrics that I just love. I’m using a bit of it for a stitchery (see below) and love working with it. But I don’t think those two are the right pairing.

I started this stitchery on the weekend. I have a plan to make a little stitching book with this on the front cover. Another thing started but not finished. I had a great little stitching book DH made for me with a paper folder when I was making diamonds from Quilted Diamonds 2. I want to make a fabric one in which to keep blocks in progress and have a design idea that I think will work. We’ll see.

Lester sometimes sleeps like this, with his nose sort of buried in his fur. We always think he looks like a bird with its head under its wing.

We had a glorious weekend, even broke a record on Saturday when it hit almost 8 degrees. It was so wonderful to open the windows and leave them open for hours. We even had the heat off for a bit. Sunday was nice too, although a bit chillier. And it looks like this week will all be above freezing. At least 75 per cent of the snow on the roof garden is gone, and there are huge puddles everywhere as the mounds of snow start melting.

I hope the fires in Australia are brought under control quickly. Every time we have the news on and we hear more about them, I think of all the wonderful Australian quilters I’ve met through blogging.

Butterfly Stars

Not a lot of progress on Butterfly Stars this week, it seems. I’m now almost out of embroidered butterfly hexagons and need to make more stars so will spend a bit of time this weekend on that. This is where it stands right now.

As you can see, Smudge was determined to get in on this picture!

Wednesday night it was bitterly cold here with a wind chill close to -30C. Even though we had the heat turned right up, it was quite chilly in the apartment. I woke up in the middle of the night and piled quilts on top of the duvet again. That makes it very cozy and warm.

This weekend I hope to make the stars for Butterfly Stars and get at least another 12 or 16 butterfly hexagons ready. Whirling Arches blocks are calling to me too — I’d love to get another one of those blocks made and, of course, work on Red Delicious apple cores.

And yet another picture of Lester in his kitty bed.

Giddy at the Thought of Spring

I completely got off track this weekend as far as stitching goes. Friday night I worked on Red Delicious apple cores, Saturday I did some stitching on the machine (!), the results of which I’ll show later in the week, but yesterday? Yesterday I played with the new Inklingo Lite collection of the shapes for a 12-inch Drunkard’s Path block.

Drunkard’s Path is one of my favourite blocks. More curved piecing!! I love playing with all the variations. I decided to use these fabrics in honour of spring and am going to call this quilt “Giddy at the Thought of Spring”. I’m undecided whether I will do all the blocks the same or use a variety. Here’s the first 12-inch block done, Whirling Arches. It will be another lap quilt.

What a glorious Sunday we had with temperatures near 4!! I know it was a teaser but we needed that after all those days on end of -20 wind chills. We go back to the -20 wind chills mid-week but at least we had that one day. I had windows open for a while and was even outside with a fall jacket rather than heavy winter one on. I have purposely avoided finding out what the groundhog results were today as it’s very sunny, so I suppose he saw his shadow. I don’t want to know!!

Lester and Smudge are sitting together more and more often. We got this shot of them last night. They don’t stay together very long, and they don’t really fit too well in the chair at once, but we get a huge kick out of them being together like this!

Quilting Over Stitchery??

As I work on this little baby quilt I’m thinking about how to quilt it. Not having done a quilt with stitcheries in it before, I have no idea what’s the best thing to do. Does one quilt over the stitcheries, just do in the ditch stitching around the block? The hexagons with the butterflies are 4″ from tip to tip, top to bottom and 2″ to each side. As it is a baby quilt which will, I hope, get lots of use, I’d like to quilt it fairly heavily, most likely by machine, to ensure it stands up.

I cropped one of the pictures to show the stitchery hexagons a little bit better. There’s not much room to do any quilting in those blocks unless I do quilt over the stitching. Any advice is more than welcome on this!!

This is another piece I started ages ago using 1″ hexagons and equilateral triangles. As I find a new coloured fabric that I like with it, I add more rows of hexagons and triangles. Currently it’s about 22″. I’m not sure, but I think I may finish off the second blue with enough rounds to make stars in that fabric and then perhaps end it off with a soft yellow. It’s really wonderfully enjoyable mindless stitching, lots and lots of lovely continuous stitching that makes it go together incredibly fast.

I’m going to look through and see if I have a soft yellow that will work with this. I’m not sure about this yet, but I’m thinking this might be an appropriate baby quilt to have done and tucked away for next time.

We had a lot of snow on Wednesday, it snowed a bit more on Thursday and now they’re saying there’s another big storm on the way for Monday/Tuesday?? I cannot believe the amount of snow we’ve had this year already. All I can hope is that as it started early, it will end early and we’ll have spring starting sometime in March. I wonder what the groundhog is going to predict next week.

Yet another picture of the boys together. We see them do this so rarely that we practically fall over ourselves grabbing the camera!
