Another Swap!

I’ve joined the Four Seasons Quilt – Swap 5! I’m really glad I did although I sure left it to the last second to do so! The quilts are to be monochromatic. I can’t wait to see all the different quilts that will be made for this.

Little embroidery blocks are fun. 2″ hexagon blocks with butterflies are even more fun! The pattern was actually printed on the hexagons using Inklingo collection #1. I decided to make a small quilt of butterflies and — well, I haven’t quite decided on the fabric yet, but I’m leaning towards some Kaffe Fassett prints. It won’t be large but will be, I think, cute. And it will be a gift.

And Lester — gazing out the window. But it’s not from today. Today it’s grey and overcast and gloomy and, after a bit of snow last night, is supposed to pour rain all day.

Snow Crystals 10 & 11

It’s getting close — having 12 of these blocks done, that is. I’m not sure but think when there are 16 of them done I’ll start playing with layouts. The current plan is to make 2 lap quilts of pink and white Snow Crystal blocks, but that plan may well change.

This is block 10 done, front and back:

And this is block 11. I love this pink fabric but it is unbelievably difficult to needle. Went through 3 needles just piecing this. Don’t think I’ll use this fabric for hand piecing again — at least, not with this many pieces of it in a block.

It was a cold weekend and we had a bit of snow. Smudge doesn’t care — he just sprawls somewhere and has a nap.

Partial Snow Crystal

As we watched the Wednesday night news coverage of what’s going on in Ottawa, I began yet another Snow Crystal. I love this pink print!! It’s wonderfully easy to needle and presses beautifully — although you wouldn’t know it from this picture. I’m hoping to finish this one Thursday.

Although Lester is in this shot, it’s really more about the way the light plays on the office building across the roof garden in the late afternoon. It was really remarkably pretty this afternoon — there was a real pink glow to it. Hmm — seems to be a theme here. Pink, pink and more pink.

Smudge, watching who knows what through the lace sheers.

Pink, Pink, Pink

Another snow crystal block has been started. I have the 4 partial corner stars for the block done so, with any luck, I’ll have this block finished tomorrow. That will be 12 blocks done for this quilt. Now to decide how big it’s going to be. I have a feeling it’s going to end up larger than I anticipated — or that I’ll make two. Maybe two lap quilts with different settings. And maybe one with some black sashing.

A quilting friend (no-blog friend) and I are exchanging cuts of pinks to print our diamonds on for these blocks. These are the pinks I received from her. Not one duplication!! This is so much fun!!

Smudge really knows how to relax. It’s the front paws that get me — and he’s sound asleep in this shot.

Another shot of Lester when his ruff had been very recently combed. Give it 2 or 3 minutes and he has it all messy again, so every picture like this we manage to get I treasure!!

Yet Another Snow Crystal

After getting the SSCS packages on their way, I decided to work on a snow crystal block a couple of nights ago. This block goes together so nicely and quickly once the centre star is made. Thanks to Inklingo, everything fits perfectly.

Now that it’s finally pressed, I can share a photo.

I’m still fascinated by the backs of these blocks after pressing them. The blocks lie so flat when pressed like this.

Lester, shortly after we had combed his ruff. Right after combing, he looks quite majestic. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last long as he is insistent on licking and chewing it.

1,800 Half-Inch Hexagons

Have you ever wondered what 1,800 half-inch hexagons would look like in a stack? Well, this is it! 1,800 half-inch hexagons in 9-hexagon sheets. We’re having another Inklingo swap, this time of sets of 9 hexagons in each of 10 different fabrics. There are 18 participants so that means a lot of printing — and cutting!

I doubted I’d get mine done as my hands have been so bad the last little while but I put on the braces and got it done. As I’m hostessing the swap, I see the swap packets as they arrive and I think there are going to be some fabulous quilt possibilities from this swap.

I got mail on Friday! Another package of pinks from Amy at The Calico Cat. Fabulous, gorgeous, glorious pinks!! I’m planning a double wedding ring quilt in pinks, greens and creams as well as working on the pink and white Snow Crystals — so all these pinks are so appreciated!

The boys lined up at the window. Lester can look so elegant — sometimes. Unfortunately, this was one of the times we took a shot just after he had been licking/chewing on his ruff and it looks rather messy. We comb and comb him, but two minutes later he’s got it looking like this again. I figure he just likes an unkempt look.

It was a chilly weekend and we even saw snowflakes! Big fat fluffy snowflakes drifted by the window for a bit Sunday afternoon. Thankfully, they didn’t stay and nothing accumulated. The Toronto Santa Claus Parade was on Sunday so it was, I suppose, rather fitting that there should be a few snowflakes.

The Finally Finished Label

The label is finally done and is ready to applique on to the back of the quilt when it arrives. Writing the names on was almost comical – I kept making errors and had to start fresh each time. It was fun to put this together and I’m thinking that a few done with Oriental fabrics and a really rich centre might be quite striking for place mats — but for show only!

This is the roof garden now — very few leaves left and the one bush has partially changed colour.

Smudge watching — squirrels, birds, who knows?

Lester doing the same.

Snow Crystals, Butterflies and Kitties

Another Snow Crystal block is almost complete. The white on white is the same one I had used in the blue and white Texas Star quilt. I had forgotten just how difficult that is to needle. I’m putting a note on what’s left of it so that I won’t be tempted to use it again for hand piecing anything! Actually, I wonder if there’s a way to get some of that paint off — maybe soak it in turpentine or something!

In a comment left yesterday, Rosaline noticed the corners of the pieces are sort of rounded off. That’s another one of the benefits of the newer Inklingo collections — the shapes are printed like that which makes it so so easy to line pieces up when stitching.

Peg has been encouraging me to take up embroidery again. I wanted to experiment a bit before committing to tracing a lot, so I printed out a few of the 2-inch hexagons with butterflies from the first Inklingo collection and did them. I’m hooked! First I’m going to do about a dozen of these hexagons with butterflies and surround them with batiks and/or hand dyes.

These are my first two butterflies. My knots need a little work for the knobs on their antennae but, all in all, I’m pretty happy with the results.

This has to be one of the best pictures of Lester yet. I love the reflection of him in the window!

Smudge, resting a paw on one leg and then resting his head on that paw. Too cute!

A Snack Quilt

Working with the diamonds for the Snow Crystals blocks has been fun for me. The pieces in those blocks are, to me, quite large. I’ve been enjoying how quickly I get a large block done (yes, to me a 9″ block is large). It certainly is different from working with a half-inch hexagon or 60-degree diamond.

Today I got a new Inklingo pattern for a hexagon quilt made with 1.5″ hexagons called the Snack Quilt. Those are big hexagons; one could have this quilt put together in next to no time, especially with the hybrid stitching tips for putting it partially together by machine and partly by hand. Me? I’ll do it all by hand because I enjoy the hand sewing so much but I can see the time-saving benefits of the hybrid stitching.

I love Linda’s reasoning behind the naming of this quilt: On Halloween, I am more into Chocolate than Slasher Movies. There is waaaaay too much chocolate in this house today, all of it Fun Size, and haunting my every thought. So far, I have resisted, but who knows what mischief will happen by moonlight!

I am not a fortune-teller but I foresaw this chocolate nightmare, which might as well be called invasion of the body snatchers, and I have a suggestion … you might want to try the new pattern on the web site, called ‘Snack Quilt.’ When I fill my bowl with fabric hexagons instead of chocolate, it turns a horror show in front of the mirror into something a little less terrifying, a little less like a pumpkin.”

What a great idea — rather than filling up a bowl with left-over Hallowe’en candy, fill up a bowl with fabric shapes and sit and stitch a few together rather than eat up that candy!

Smudge and Lester say the whole thing is just a big yawn! 🙂

Block 4

These pink and white Snow Crystal blocks are going together amazingly quickly. I finished this one off last night.

Every time I press one of these blocks, I’m thrilled with how the little seam intersections all work out and the block lies so flat. This is a very good reminder to myself to do the blocks as I go rather than save them up and do a bunch at once. That becomes tedious. Doing a block at a time is quick and, when all the blocks are done, I’ll be ready to stitch the rows together rather than having to press endlessly.

I think, if I add 2 or 3 more sets of large hexagons surrounded by stars to this candle mat/table runner/ whatever it is that I had started, this would be a nice size and perhaps a good Christmas gift. Binding this may be an adventure but I love the look of it and think some pretty quilting could be done in the centre of the large plain hexagons.

The gardener has been out on the roof garden taking the flowers out of the flower beds and from around the trees. It is now really starting to look like the grey days of fall have arrived. Looking out and not seeing those brilliant colours means, I guess, that winter really is coming. I hope every year that somehow it might give us a miss but …

Lester is definitely getting his winter coat. Some serious combing/brushing will be going on around here now.
