Cabin Quilt Block 1

This is the first of 12 stitchery blocks for a lap quilt that is from the other kit that I had mentioned last week.  Once the stitchery blocks are done, then it’s a matter of some quick machine stitching.  I said quick machine stitching??  It involves cutting some flannel squares into triangles to surround the stitchery and pieced blocks and I’m a bit concerned about the flannel stretching.  Mr. Q.O. really likes this quilt, though, so I’m going to give it a try.

I managed to do the first stitchery block last night.  When we were at Sew Sisters on the weekend, I asked what they used behind fabric when doing stitcheries and they suggested either a fusible batt or fusible fleece.  I got a small fusible batting and I’m sold!  It makes it quite easy to travel thread for a bit when stitching without it shadowing through on the front.  As the back shows, I took advantage of that capability a few times.

I have always loved doing a little hand embroidery but the hoop has been my biggest issue for the past few years as tightening and loosening it was almost impossible.  So I found this hoop and tried using it.  What an amazing difference!  It’s easy and quick to use, holds the fabric perfectly for stitching and there’s no hardware on which to catch the thread.

This is what the quilt will look like when finished, although I’m not sure I’m going to do the tree appliques on the border.  I’ll decide that when I get that far.  The pattern calls for tea-dying the stitchery blocks when finished.  As I like the look of the stitchery blocks in the photo of the quilt, I think I may try that as well.

Monday, like Friday, was a migraine day.  While not quite as bad as Friday when I could barely move, yesterday was bad enough.  Today is the bruised head feeling that always seems to follow.  So once again I’m behind in replying to comments but hope to get caught up through the week.

Smudge curled up sound asleep.

I have to use an antique DOS program for work so, rather than cluttering up my Mac with any Windows software, I have an older laptop just for that purpose. Lester is constantly trying to “help” and I’m usually on guard for a paw on the laptop keys.  I think he watches the cursor moving on the screen.

  1. Love your block #1! I might just have to get that pattern and make that quilt! I live in a log house so it would fit right in with the decor! I do longarm quilting so I could make it this weekend, IF I had the blocks all embroidered!

  2. What a cute quilt! Perhaps you could stitch the trees in the border instead of appliqueing them? Hope you feel better soon, bad headaches can really leave you feeling 2nd-hand can’t they.

  3. I use a hoop exactly like the one you are using. It is so much easier than turning the screw mechanism on the other type hoop. And I use a lightweight batting behind my stitchery blocks. I just spray a little bit of of a basting spray to hold in place.

  4. Sorry to hear that another migraine surfaced, hope they take a vacation…and give you a long, long rest! The cabin quilt is very attractive, know Mr O will love it! I’d never backed my squares of embroidery, what a great idea! I love those hoops too…and at times of frustration with thread catching…I’ll even reverse which side is up…to keep threads away from the little handles. It’s getting cooler now it is autumn and my cats have learned to push my laptop closed and climb onto…for the warmth! Whew, now I’m not only watching for two sets of little hands…but two sets of little paws! 😉 Happy Stitching! Hugs for that bruised head!

  5. Nice stitching. Makes me want to go for it too. I used to cross stitch for about 10 years and I used the same loop. It’s just perfect.
When working on a computer, there’s always a helping paw not far away ! 😉

  6. Sorry about the migrains. Mine let up tons after menopause. Thank goodness. Lester may like the cursor on the computer but we got 2 new puppies Sunday and one of them is amazed by the blue lights on our tv remote. What a hoot! I’m glad you’re getting so much done, but really, you make me feel like I’m standing still!

  8. That is going to be such a cute quilt. Ya gotta keep the hubby all snuggly and warm so you can keep making the pretty fluff type blocks LOL.

  9. Cathi, this quilt will be lovely. (I know. I say that about everyone of your quilts and it is true!) I really enjoy embroidery in quilts. I have used just plain batting for the back of my stitchery and found it works great. Have a great day. Hope the migraines are gone for a while, at least. Winona

  10. Your new project is great! I made that quilt for my brother for his college graduation. It was one of my very early quilts projects and I worked so hard on it. When I look at it now, I see all the mistakes but at the time I was so proud! The trees are OK to do. I appliqued them after putting on the borders. Have fun and I’m sure Mr. QO will love the quilt!
