Farewell to a Beautiful Tree

Up until about 15 minutes ago, this was the view looking towards the west from our living room.

Ten minutes ago, this happened:

There is something unbearably sad about a beautiful tree being cut down. I understand there was root disease and they had to have it removed but the sound when the tree fell was indescribable. Up until the tree removal people arrived, the birds had been singing and it was a wonderfully peaceful Saturday morning. Now? Now, there are no birds singing.

This is the view looking towards the west from our living room now. It’s going to take some getting used to. One of the best things about this apartment was the fact we had trees in front of the windows which, in the spring, summer and most of the fall, hid the fact we are right in the middle of the concrete jungle of downtown.

  1. Oh, Cathi, that's so hard to watch! But of course you have to cut a diseased tree before it falls and hurts someone or something. On the up side, 3 years ago we had to have all the trees in our yard cut — an incurable disease that every tree of that type in town has. It took awhile, but now it looks great back there again. The people who care for your rooftop garden do such a great job, I'm sure they'll work on this.

  2. It's so sad to see trees being cut down – even when it's necessary. It seems to me sometimes that we're making our environment more artificial than real, and the loss of each tree only compounds that. Hopefully they'll plant at least one to replace it.

  3. How terrible. I love trees and it's always sad when one has to be cut down. hopefully they'll plant a new one and in a year or so it'll grow into the beautiful tree that it replaceslove and hugs Gina xxx

  4. How sad. I lost a large pine tree a couple of winters back during high winds. Now only one tree protects my shade garden. I thought I would have to change my shade garden to a sun garden, but much to my surprise, my garden is thriving! The best it has ever been. The rain now gets to it and it is just beautiful. It happened for a reason. Maybe something good will come of the removal of your tree.
