Odds and Ends

Another Tropical Punch block finished, but not yet pressed. I have come to the conclusion that I much prefer working with batiks for these blocks over the other cottons that I have been using for some of the coloured fabrics. The pink fabric for the star in the centre of this block is not a batik and the difference was incredibly noticeable.

The centre of what will become a star of sorts using the diamonds I showed yesterday was started last night. The centre will be yellow and then I’m going to add all the oranges and then perhaps the pinks. I’ll decide once the oranges have all been added. This just may end up a small wall hanging or who knows?? I just know I want to play with adding more and more diamonds around the middle star and see where I end up.

Have you seen and/or worked with flannel batiks? I’ve read about them but not yet seen any. I find it hard to imagine what they’re like but am intrigued — very intrigued!

These are 8 half-yard cuts of flannels, but not flannel batiks. I have no idea what to do with them other than a simple lap quilt. As I don’t think flannel is going to be anywhere near as much fun to hand piece, I guess this will be a challenge to myself to use the machine. I love the colours and think it will be a wonderful lap quilt to have for next winter.

Yet another Smudge pose.

Lester on the windowsill. He’s getting ready for spring. They say that today we may hit 15C. What a wild swing in temperatures from Monday when we had wind chills in the -27C range. I hope this is truly the beginning of spring. We’ll have windows open and the heat turned down for sure!

  1. I’ve never hand pieced flannel probably because I never buy them LOL. I did make a rag quilt for my son but did that on a machine. I’ve wondered about the batik flannel too. I wouldn’t think they would look as crisp as the cotton ones. You know, I think Smudge has relaxing down to a science. He always looks so comfy regardless of how he twists his body.

  2. Love the block, the colors! 8-)I am working with batics right now too. First time. I likes them! 8-)In your “Favourite Stitching Tools” post, I see you have your thread snips there. That is something that is a must to be beside me too! Love them! 8-)Your flannels look great! I have never worked with the flannels as of yet… still getting caught up on UFOs, and working with fabrics marked for new projects that are in the sewing room already…

  3. Such a lovely block! I’ve never seen a flannel batik. I wonder if Sew Sisters might have any… Road trip time!As for spring – the little hyacinth in my front garden survived the cold this week and is a tiny bit bigger than when we last looked. The downside is that we lose an hour’s sleep this weekend. 😦

  4. Batik seams stay pressed where regular fabric needs extra care. That is one of the reasons I like the batiks so much.Batik flannels are just batik patterns on flannel so it is fairly heavy. I like flannel quilts just made with 6.5″ squares and not quilted too heavily. That makes a good cuddle quilt.

  5. My grand daughter learned to hand sew when she was about 5 or 6 using flannel squares and she made doll blankets out of them. It kept her busy all weekend. Her brother learned to hand sew the same weekend. He was the one who wanted to learn and she had to do it too. They both love to sew.

  6. You are so prolific with those blocks! The cats are amazed at all of your progress. We use flannel for backings on the quilt’s for children. Makes for a very comfy quilt.
