Friday Fabric Ideas

I don’t know if this will work or not but I have this beautiful piece of green flannel that I was thinking about using as a border for the Butterfly Stars baby quilt. I like the idea of a really soft flannel along the edges but have never combined a flannel and flat cotton in a top. I’m not worried about shrinkage as I pre-wash everything anyway but wonder if it would result in uneven wear of the quilt top if I mixed regular cotton and a flannel?

This picture shows the flannel I’ve got set aside for the backing of the baby quilt. I have enough of it that I could use it for a border as well, but I don’t think I like it quite as much for the border. Perhaps I’ll add the half elongated hexagons and other bits in the white cotton so as to have straight edges and not add a border. If I do that, I will use a scrappy ’30s binding.

Look at these! I’m having all sorts of ideas for these pinks and oranges and the yellow. I want to add some reds to the mix — me, who has never bought red. I’m thinking that these would make marvelous stars.

And then there are these 4 fabrics. I don’t know quite what I want to do with them but I do know that I want to do something special with them. I love how they play together.

DH got good news yesterday from the eye doctor. His eye is improving, he’s still on 4 drops every 4 hours but he doesn’t have to go back until Monday. This will be the first day all week he hasn’t been to the eye doctor.

This photo of Lester is my current favourite. It may be a bit soft focus, but I love it! Look at those whiskers!!

  1. Such gorgeous fabrics, all of them, but I especially love that red polka dot. Yum! Don’t know what to tell you about the wear of the flannel vs the cotton, but if you do put a border, I agree that the green is the better choice. Looks like you’re almost done!

  2. I’ve been following your progress on that baby quilt and I really like it. I’d like to try that pattern for a table topper…I always have grand plans but then just sit on my keester for way to long and forget my grand ideas…but anyway…I do like your quilt. I think the green flannel would be fine for a backing but it seems the wrong color for a border. When I looked at the photo, I thought a deep or darker purple might draw out the butterflies better. Of course I only see the quilt in a photo and not in person to see the real colors. Just my two cents. I do like the color combos of fabrics you have set aside for a special project…you have a great eye!

  3. It’s hard to go wrong with a nice, soft flannel in any part of a quilt. Still I like the idea of filling in with white and a scrappy binding . . . . sounds pretty darned sweet *s*

  4. Hi Cathi,Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving such a sweet note; I appreciate it.I love Inklingo, too, and your baby quilt is wonderful. About the flannel, I learned that it takes about 3 washings for the flannel to shrink completely. I used to make receiving blankies for newborns with cotton on one side and flannel on the other. That’s how I learned to wash the flannel THREE times b4 sewing it to the cotton. HTHs.I love your colors!Hugs,Cyn:)

  5. I like the green for the border but your other idea would work well too. So now you have to make 2 of them so you can do both, LOL!If it is a good quality flannel it should wear well as a border. The cheaper, loosely woven ones are the only ones to worry about. As long as it was washed in hot water and dried in a hot dryer, it should be shrunk enough.

  6. I like that green colour for the border …. gives it such a fresh spring look. I think that as long as the flannel is good quality, it should wear pretty well because a baby quilt will get a lot of use and washings.
