Patchwork of the Crosses — Block 17

After looking at the photo taken outside of the 16 blocks, I realized that there are a couple that may need to be replaced as I think they may stand out a bit too much. I want to make this a 20 or 24-block quilt anyway, and have an idea for using the blocks that may be removed.

The other thing I realized is that there’s not much blue in the first 16 blocks. So I picked out the pieces for and made this block — with a little purple for good measure.

The back:

We have these plants in a couple of spots on the roof garden. The colour of the flowers is incredibly vibrant.

A close-up of one of the flowers on the plant.

Lester in his favourite spot on the windowsill Monday afternoon:

And Smudge resting. He has recently discovered that a straw is a great toy. It’s so funny watching him — those enormous paws hitting the straw and batting it around. He gets very intense about it and will play for ages. Other than his caterpillar toy, the straw seems to be the only toy he really enjoys playing with. Lester, on the other hand, will play with just about any of the kitty toys in the basket.

Late Summer on the Roof Garden

I guess all the rain we had this summer really has helped make the roof garden look fantastic. This was taken just after some more rain early Sunday afternoon.

The flowerbeds still look wonderful.

The colour of this flower is so intense that it’s the first thing one’s eye is drawn to, even when looking down from two floors above!

The crab apple tree is loaded down with apples. They are so pretty to look at, and the birds and squirrels definitely seem to appreciate them.

Hmm — one of the squirrels sneaking up. They’re so funny to watch.

To keep this somewhat quilt related, I realized this weekend that the baby bow tie quilt is about one-third quilted. I cannot get over how much faster and easier it is to quilt without a hoop! Granted, I’m doing only straight lines of quilting and no fancy feathered wreaths or anything, but it’s incredibly fast.

Day and Night

All of a sudden, the other day, we looked out and all these white flowers had appeared in the flower garden. I guess the good part of all the rain we’ve had this summer is that the garden has really been spectacular — when one can get out there when it’s not raining, that is.

Last night, we had an incredibly pretty sunset. I tried to get a shot of it. The camera really didn’t read the pink in the sky that well, but this picture fascinates me as it is.

I think perhaps yesterday’s post re the guild membership was a bit confusing. The wait list is because the guild has a huge, huge membership so one needs to wait for a membership spot to open up and the application is only, I believe, an application giving your pertinent details with which you send your membership fee.

Smudge seems to have been getting more exposure this week, so it’s definitely time for a Lester photo!

Friday Flowers

It is hot. Seriously hot. With the humidex, it’s around 36 and the air quality is awful! It feels so humid that I wonder when those of us who live in this type of climate will develop gills for breathing! I am NOT complaining, though. I’ll take this over cold windy snowy winter weather any day.

It’s almost too hot to think, though. Was definitely too much for me last night. At almost 1:00 a.m. it was still around 33 with the humidex.

This morning I looked out and saw these lilies had appeared in one of the flower beds. They’re a very pretty pale pink/peach colour. Everything on the roof garden is so amazingly lush and green as a result of all the rain we’ve had this year. It really is beautiful out there and, thankfully, much cooler than on street level.

The gardeners have put pretty little flowers around the base of the trees. They added the small white ones this week.

Look at the colour of these flowers! They are unbelievably vivid and rich.

Smudge loves the caterpillar toy and last night we noticed he had it in his kitty bed. I’m not sure if he’s using it as a pillow or if he’s just making sure Lester can’t get it!

I’ll be finishing up my Four Seasons quilt this weekend. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Flowers — Fabric and Real

I just can’t seem to stop trying out these little flowers. This one was very very easy to make.

This is the orchid pattern — I love the effect and had to make it using two sets of fabrics. I was unsure of it but went to a local florist’s shop to see some real orchids and was a bit more satisfied about the shape.

I prefer it with the darker fabric as the centre.

Yet another — these are way too addictive. I can envision a small wall-hanging with branches and flowers of varying types. Or these could be used to adorn small needle books — the list just seems to go on and on.

I tried this one last night. I’m not thrilled with my fabric choices for it but I’m looking at all of these as a learning experience right now.

Some more of the flowers out on the roof garden. I have no idea what they are, but they’re absolutely gorgeous.

These wonderful warm afternoons seem to equate a sleepy kitty. This may be one of my favourite pictures of Smudge.
