Looking for Inspiration

These mostly black and white shirting prints have been sitting for a long time, waiting for me to figure out just what I want to do with them. I can’t seem to settle on any design and, as I am really not into the 1800’s repro prints, what fabric to use with them.

I keep thinking about pairing them with some bright batiks and seeing where that leads me or perhaps I should do some stars using mostly black prints and the shirting prints with some bright yellow or red in a few unexpected spots and make a quilt along the lines of this one on Carpe Quiltem’s blog. While I have some ideas, none of them are really inspiring me to cut into these and start using them.

Help!! I just cannot figure out in what to use these — and I want to work with them! Any and all opinions welcome!

Sometimes I think Smudge looks like a wise little brown owl.

Mystery Quilt and Applique Success

I tried the “backwards” applique last night and couldn’t believe the difference! And this after hand quilting for a few hours! I’m sold — but will force myself to just do a little at a time!

The cleaning out of pizza boxes and drawers resulted in another find — the beginnings of Rose Sampler Supreme pattern by Rosemary Makhan. Don’t know if that one will get finished or if I’ll just use the few blocks I’ve made for cushions or something. Still thinking on that.

This is a picture of the little quilt I made that I can’t show yet. I used a tool in Photoshop to conceal the pattern, but it gives you a good idea of all the colours I used in it. Photoshop is a lot of fun to play with!

And this is our Smudge — as soon as he hears that camera click, he’s right there.

Tuesday Tidbits

What have I been working on lately? A small quilt made with these fabrics — but I can’t show it yet. I think I’ve been inspired by Wanda at Exuberant Color to work with brighter colours than is my norm and have really enjoyed it! The little top is basted and the quilting of it is about to begin.

On Friday, I had to go in to one of the court reporters’ offices with which I work. They were touching up some of the boardroom tables with some stain or something and the smell was awful. I was only in there for about 5 minutes, if that, to pick up proofreading and that was it for me — a headache that just wouldn’t quit and a sore throat. I know I’m sensitive to paint and things like that but that reaction was incredible after only a few minutes. How the people who work there all day stood it is beyond me!

I just realized, when I looked at these pictures, that there is a resemblance between the two boys — they are half brothers, after all.

Cleaning out the Pizza Box

Peg’s challenge still has me motivated, it seems, to get some things finished up. So I got out the pizza box where I have some applique blocks stored and found this little block. There’s a pattern for a number of teddy bears in different occupations — called “Bear Family”. I have the nurse bear done so far and one other block is back-basted, ready to go.

And I found these — all from the Piece o’Cake patterns called “Flourishes”. I have 8 of the 12 blocks done. I’d like to try to finish this one even though applique is becoming a problem for my hands — perhaps if I just do a little bit at a time rather than sitting down and appliqueing for a few hours at a time it will help. I’m also going to try a different way of stitching and stitch towards myself, rather than away. Apparently that is helping a lot of people. We’ll see.

And, finally, a picture of Smudge awake!

Squirrels and Cats

We have quite a few squirrels out on the roof garden this summer. They’re so used to people feeding them out there that they come running! Although this looks like this one is running away from us, he was running towards where there were some nuts.

There’s an older man in our building who goes out almost every evening after dinner and feeds them. It’s really quite sweet to watch him out there with the squirrels inching closer and closer to get their treat from him.

I think it’s partly because we’re right smack in the middle of downtown of a huge city, but seeing a little bit of wildlife like this on our roof garden is quite wonderful!

I couldn’t resist taking a photo of this little guy curled up asleep on a branch of the tree in front of our living room window. I think if you click on the picture you’ll get a better look at him.

I’m not quite sure about this look on Smudge’s face, although I think it’s his “Yes, I know I’m quite amazing and you may take my picture now, if you must,” look. 🙂

Finishes for Peg’s Challenge

As requested by Peg in this post, I am posting photos of the 3 projects I finished as a result of her Finish Five by End of July challenge.

First was the teddy bear’s quilt.

Then the orchid quilt for the Four Seasons Quilt Swap.

And finally, the one that just squeaked in under the wire — my blue and white Texas Star quilt.

Were it not for Peg’s challenge, I’m relatively sure that the blue and white would not have been finished. Thank you, Peg — it was a lot of fun and so great to have three projects finished.

I think I may have posted this photo of Lester before but I just cannot resist posting it again. I love the look on his face in this one!

One More Finish for July

Thanks to Peg’s challenge, I finished this blue and white Texas Star quilt. The last of the binding was tacked down late last night. I am thrilled to have it finished and know that if it hadn’t been for Peg’s challenge, it likely would still be sitting in bits and pieces. I kept avoiding it because the white on white fabric was so tough to needle but now it’s done and I’m ecstatic!

It was a very odd day here today. Raining and thundering, then sunny, then cloudy again — I don’t know if it’s over yet, but at least it stopped long enough that we could get a picture of the quilt out on the roof garden.

And yet another rainy day sleepy kitty picture of Smudge. 🙂

Christmas in July

Look what arrived at my home yesterday! A big box from Lettie at Polka Dot Pineapple — I won her Christmas Giveaway a couple of weeks ago and the box arrived today!

The goodies in that box are, for the most part, Christmas related, but we are so enjoying the summer that the pictures had to be taken outdoors on the roof garden. First of all — the wonderful Christmas tree skirt and the Christmas stocking.

What else was there? Yo-yo Annie (a close-up of her is below), 3 gift tags, 4 wine glass or coffee mug mats, a fantastic pincushion, two pins, a great tea caddy, a fabulous little pillow …

The close-up of Yo-yo Annie. She is absolutely adorable and the detail is something else!

And a box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts as well as a tin of butter candy glazed macadamia nuts! What a treat those are!!

And a fabulous little jewellery pouch! It’s wonderful with lots and lots of little pockets inside. I just love it!

Oh, what am I saying? I love everything that arrived in that wonderful box! Just look at all these goodies!

Thank you, Lettie — this was a great treat to open. And looking at all these things you made is — well, I always love looking at your creations on your blog but to see some of them in person is wonderful!

On another note, my Four Seasons Summer quilt was mailed today. I forgot to take a picture of the back. Maybe the recipient will when it arrives.

Lester looking — well, I’m not sure how he’s looking. Pensive, thoughtful, sleepy?

An Almost Finish

What did I do this weekend? Worked on the blue and white Texas Star quilt. It’s quilted and the binding is attached to the front. I’m hoping to finish the binding and have this done in time to qualify as my third finish for Peg’s Finish 5 in July challenge.

I’m very tempted to do this pattern again but this time in lots of colours for the star points. It is so easy to put together, thanks to Inklingo, and I think it would really be a fun quilt if done in brights. Next time, if I do make it a next time, I’m using a woven in white on white or cream for background. I would have loved to have hand quilted this one but that white on white is next to impossible to needle. It was bad enough to hand piece; I cannot imagine what it would have been like to try to quilt through it!

Some more work was done on the secret project as well, which I’m hoping can be unveiled this week.

Smudge took over the windowsill spot for a while this weekend.

A Finish and Perhaps a Beginning

I decided to go with the folded orchids for the Four Seasons quilt and this is it — finished for all but the label on the back. The label is ready but I had to give my hands a rest as it seems applique is now another thing that triggers the pain/inflammation. What a nuisance!

I will get the label on it this weekend and it will leave here early next week on its way to my swap partner. I hope she likes it!

(Edited to Add: I’m counting this as one of my finishes for Peg’s Challenge. I know I’ll not finish five, but there is one more I am going to try to finish before July 31.)

Making this little quilt really has me re-assessing just how much applique is in my future. It is time to go through the applique kits and BOM’s I have and decide which ones to let go. There are a couple that I know I will keep and work on very very slowly, but it’s obvious to me now that applique is not something I will continue to be able to do. I’m thankful I can piece with no problems. It’s odd how that small difference in hand movement can make such a huge difference!

I’m still working on the surprise project and hope to reveal it next week. As I work on it, though, I keep looking at these fabrics. They are definitely calling to me — and I’m trying to sort out just what I want to make with them.

The boys, sharing a little yogurt treat. We never have yogurt without the two of them lining up for their share, although Smudge seems to get more than Lester.
