Spring Circles Update

We got this shot of Spring Circles out on the roof garden on Monday.  Right now it’s 45″  square.  I’ve decided to finish it at 54 x 63, which means 3 more rows after the one on which I’m working.  Part of what I’ll do this weekend is print whatever I need in way of shapes for the remaining 3 rows.

Monday morning we woke up to a nice day but, shortly after awakening, I developed a horrible headache, sore throat and kept smelling something awful but couldn’t quite figure out what it was.  Lester also reacted rather dramatically to it.  His eyes were running, he was sneezing and seemed quite uncomfortable.  I finally heard noise at our door — turns out that they were touching up the exteriors of the suite doors on our floor with what has to be the most foul-smelling paint in the world.  The smell lingered all day.  We burned candles for a while, turned on the stove hood fan and then set out a big bowl of vinegar, all in an effort to combat the odour. What we learned?  Candles don’t do anywhere near as much good as a bowl of vinegar in helping to combat the odour.   What I can’t begin to understand is how the painters can work with that stuff day in and day out.

Before the painters started on our floor, Lester was on windowsill duty.  There were a lot of birds on the lawn and, at one point, his tail was swishing like mad.  For a minute, I thought he was going to start chattering at them.

Smudge wasn’t affected by the smell.  He was happily getting ready to snooze with a stuffed toy or two.  He will often move them around to just the right positions so that he can curl up with his head on a bear and/or a paw on another little soft toy.

  1. Isn’t satisfactory to see the end of a project ? In (only) one row, your quilt top will be finished.
As for you cats, they are just lovely. I just discovered on your “About me” page that they are Main Coons. I couldn’t have guessed.

  2. Your quilt is so beautiful! You’ve really been working hard on it. I feel for you with your reaction to the paint. When I get near certain chemical based things, I have a bad reaction. It begins like you are saying, but I have gotten hives. One time I was in Lowes and there was a terrible chemical smell as if chlorine had spilled or they’d gotten in a fresh shipment. My head began to hurt, then itch, then feel like a basketball, withing 2 hr. I was in the ER w/hives covering my whole body and IV. It calmed right down as soon as they gave me the benadryl/antihistamine IV. Now I have an EPI pen just in case. It’s happened a few other times, all can be linked to chemical based things in my book. So be careful… I’d write a letter to your assoc. requesting advance notice so you can be gone and there’s so many new paints now…should be part of their contract next time… sorry to run on, but I really feel for you.
Gosh your cats are regal. XO

  4. It seems as if they’d at least notify you in advance–surely you aren’t the only person with an adverse reaction to that paint.

You’re coming along quickly on that quilt! She should love it.

  5. Cathi…Hope you are feeling better from the paint odors!…I can feel for you…I am ultra sensitive to perfumes, paint, candles, cleaners, new carpeting, lotions, makeup, shampoos, etc and also have metal/food allergies …Guess you can get the idea!…Instead of the “boy in the bubble” I feel like I should be the girl in the bubble!…At least I’m not allergic to cats! ….Wonder how I skimmed by on that one?… 🙂 …My cat sits for hours at the back slider and watches the birds and every once in a while the tail starts flying wildly and she hits that glass with her front paws trying to get at at one!….They come about 6″ close and stroll by the window right in front of her…..poor thing, must be frustrating!….Your quilt is just beautiful and how lucky your Aunt is to be getting it!….Have a great day….Annie

  7. Gosh, I’m away for a few days and you just go crazy and make all sorts of beautiful things! : D I love your quilt, and your little blocks, and your kitties.

I think I may have mentioned a while back that I was still moving my fabrics into my quilting room. The reason this has taken so long (aside from washing all the fabrics before moving them in… time consuming) is that we cut costs and used “regular” paint from a well known store, instead of the safer, fume-free paint that we’ve used for nearly 20 years. Lesson learned.

I realize that you had no control over the choice of paint, and I totally sympathise with your symptoms and misery. I couldn’t enter my sewing room for months after we painted it. UGH.

Anway, I hope you are feeling better, and that you and your neighbors can band together and require better paint in the future!!!
