Book Blog Hop & Giveaway – Recreating Antique Quilts

I was thrilled to be asked by Wendy Sheppard to take part in this blog hop introducing her book, “Recreating Antique Quilts, Re-envisioning, Modifying and Simplifying Museum Quilts.” Click on the button above and you will be taken to Wendy’s blog post where all the participants in the blog hop are listed. The book has 10 very pretty projects adapted from museum quilts. I loved seeing the pictures of the museum quilts that inspired Wendy’s version.

Landauer posted a “From the Author” article on their blog about Wendy’s inspiration to write the book. And there are fabulous photographs of some of the quilts in the book to be seen in that article. Which project did I choose? It was hard to pick one, and I was very, very tempted by the quilt on the cover of the book as seen in the button at the top of this post, but I finally decided on the Ivory Baltimore project. The above is Wendy’s beautifully quilted version of it. Wendy’s free-motion quilting skills on a domestic sewing machine always leave me in awe. There are many close-up photographs in the book showing Wendy’s marvellous quilting.

The images to trace for the appliqué had already been reversed – perfect for those who use the back-basting technique or use fusible for appliqué.

I decided to make my version of Ivory Baltimore using a mottled pink fabric I’ve had in my stash for ages with a cream for the appliqué and a different cream print for the strip in between the two rectangles. I decided to cross-hatch quilt the entire quilt. I had such fun making the yo-yos – had forgotten just how much fun they are to make! I think this little 17″ x 21″ quilt has a home on our wall in the hall as it matches the decor almost perfectly.

It was a fun project for me as I used fusible for the very first time! Clearly I had some issues with it as my vines on the left side aren’t quite the same but that’s the beauty of appliqué – it doesn’t have to be exactly the same. And they were totally my issues – I had trouble tracing because of sore hands. I’d make this again in a heartbeat – it was fun to learn a new technique and I love the look of it.

  10. I love your version of the Ivory Baltimore! Baltimore quilts are always so intimidating to me, but this simplified version is “just enough”. Your hallway seems like just the right place to hang it!

  14. I’ve always loved the look of the Baltimore quilts!! They are always inspiring…. But, intimidating at the same time. I have to admit that I never thought of making a smaller, more doable version into a wall hanging instead. Ü lovely idea!
