It’s the first day of the Say It With Flowers blog hop and I think we’re in for some real treats to see! Thank you to Madame Samm for hosting yet another great blog hop and to Carol, our cheerleader and organizer, for keeping us all on track! The list of today’s participants is at the end of my post.
As soon as I heard flowers, I immediately thought of hexagons. So out came a bag full of .50″ hexagons that I had printed on some fabrics using Inklingo and others that I had received in a swap, and I was ready to start.
I decided my little flower garden would be full of pink and purple flowers. The little quilt finishes at 8.5″ x 11.5″ and is composed of .50″ hexagons along with some half hexagons that I used in order to get a straight edge. I quilted it in the ditch, following the outline of some of the flowers.
It’s the perfect size for a teddy bear or doll quilt. The teddy bears were not sure about the weather, so one of them still had on his winter hat and scarf, but they wanted to get outside and read for a while.
And what were they reading? “The Quotable Teddy Bear.”
This floral fabric was the perfect backing for the teddy bears’ little quilt.
Making little flowers with a simple running stitch is fun and fast. Another huge bonus is being able to grade and press the seams like this to distribute the bulk.
I couldn’t stop there, though. I love making 6″ sunflowers. I used them for the centres and in the border of my red and white Feathered Stars and am making a quilt of nothing but 6″ sunflowers, all in batiks. As I love curved piecing and continuous stitching, the sunflower blocks are an absolute delight to stitch.
So on Thursday I printed the shapes I needed for one more special sunflower, cut them out and started to stitch. The piecing was finished by Friday night, the little quilt top together and quilted by Saturday afternoon. I had to make one special sunflower mini quilt for this blog hop as it is all about flowers. The mini quilt measures 8″ finished and will be hung on the wall along with some other mini quilts. I quilted it with straight lines through each of the diamonds out to the edges of the little quilt, as that made me think of rays of the sun.
I used a pale Fassett print for the backing.
When I first heard about the Say It With Flowers blog hop, I also thought of these fabric origami flowers. A few years ago, I made lots of these little delights following the instructions in the Kumiko Sudo books. These two are destined to be the covers of little needle books.
“Flowers For All.”
Baxter was reclining on a pillow, having had a busy day of watching what was happening out on the roof garden.

Your projects are all so pretty. Your fabric choices are adorable. Did you hand sew you Hexies or by machine? I have some that I have been sewing by hand and find it very time consuming. Oh, Baster is cute, doing what my cat would do. She even has the same look, kinda like you bothered her to take a picture. Thanks for sharing all.

Ok, I’m back. I was so impressed with the sunflower block that I did some searching on your site and eventually got to the Inklingo website. I do find that I’m a bit confused by the block and how Inklingo works. If I order the book Sunflower Design Book, do I need other things in order to make the block or is the book enough? Can you give me a quick rundown? Thanks.
