Ferris Wheel Quilt

Thanks to Elly, I have a name for the Farmer’s Delight quilt. Ferris Wheel seems to me to be the perfect name for this quilt. It makes me think of summer and movement and that’s definitely what a ferris wheel means to me.  It reminds me of when the Canadian National Exhibition is open in August and all the rides on the midway, not that I go anywhere near them. The ferris wheel is probably as adventurous as I would ever get when it comes to rides.

It was amazingly quick work to put the blocks together into rows and then stitch the rows together. I started stitching them together on Friday evening and finished Saturday evening. All by hand.  Although I had thought I’d join them by machine, I think it probably didn’t take me much longer to stitch by hand than it would have by machine.

I thought I had the perfect fabric for the backing, but it’s just a bit too short.  All that’s left now is to do the final pressing, get the backing prepared, baste and start quilting it.  I have the quilting planned and think it will go fairly quickly.

Over the weekend, I decided to give my blog a facelift.  It’s a bit of a work in progress, but then I suppose a blog always is a work in progress.  For now, I’ve started listing favourite quilt blogs on a separate page rather than in the sidebar.

This is possibly one of the most quirky pictures we have of Lester.  I don’t know if it was the angle at which it was taken on Sunday or what, but there’s something about this one that I love.  He looks like a much smaller cat than he is.

Smudge had just been sticking his head in the water bowl, which is how he seems to prefer to drink, and Mr. Q.O. got this shot.  If you click on it to see the large picture, you can tell the fur on one side of his face is still wet.

  1. Hi Cathi! Your new look is great! I love your new quilt and the name is perfect! I think also that you sew by hand as quickly as by machine!
Say hello to your beautiful cats and have a lovely week! xxx Teje

  2. Love the new look of the blog! It is nice to change every once in a while, like the seasons. I am amazed at how fast you can hand piece!! I don’t know if I would have been able to sew it all together that quickly. It looks fantastic. I think that you are right about Lester, that photo does make him look smaller. Guess what, my Pavi loves to put his head in the water bowl too!! Who knew that there would be another cat that likes to do that too?

  3. Great name for a beautiful qullt Cathi! I’m amazed at how fast you can hand piece. I can’t nearly piece as quick by hand as by machine.
Midas prefers to drink water in the garden from a special flower pot. Cats are funny, aren’t they?

  4. I knew it would be great! Yes, nothing like a ferris wheel ride! That is the perfect name!
Maybe Smudge was just cooling off after a long day of running around, although by the looks of them, they don’t run around a lot, always posing for pictures! 🙂

  5. I am so honoured that you have chosen to use my name suggestion for your beautiful quilt 🙂 Thank you, you’ve put a smile on my face this morning :))
Now if I had been hand piecing the seams together I’d still be on the first seam, LOL… you’re amazing!
I think it’s the paws up in front that adds to the cuteness of Lester’s picture, he does look a lot smaller perhaps more like a kitten. Smudge is as adorable as ever with his wet nose and cheek. Bunny smooches to both 🙂 Ellyx

  6. I like the new look :0) Why is it we have the perfect background fabric and it’s either too short or just not enough of it???? Lester looks like he’s a kitten LOL.

  7. I’m really diggin’ this new look!!!

Gosh Lester does look smaller in this photo, ha? Neat shot. And great pic of the Smudge and the leftover water. Bummer to read you don’t have enough backing. What are you going to do about that? Piece something in?

  8. That is the perfect name for the quilt! I’m glad you have the quilting design all figured out too, because it will be a breeze to finish now. I always agonize over the quilting design.

  9. Beautiful top…love the pastel like colors with the white backgroud. You will have to share how you solve your not enough backing issue!
Nice to see both kitties back to normal again

  10. The quilt is very pretty and spring like. Smudge sounds very like Bess what is it with Coons and water? Bess loves to paw all the water out of the bowl = wet slippery tiles and one happy coon.

  11. The Ferris Wheel quilt is just wonderful! It makes me smile every time I see those blocks. LOVE the photo of Lester. He looks so cute with his paws together and his funny expression. Smudge–he always looks so huggable LOL!

  12. Wow this quilt is great. I am handpiecing similar blocks with only one ring of points and using 4 different fabrics in each block and then all the center circles in one fabric. They are so fun to put together and I haven’t hand pieced in years. Fun to see yours with such a different look!
